Nigerian workers, who called a nationwide general strike, demanding from the President Olusegun Obasanjo to help to cut fuel prices, declared they are going to take the protest into a second day.
The streets of the commercial Nigerian capital Lagos were almost empty, service stations were closed, and the city's largest food market deserted on the first day of the strike, which was supposed to last three weeks.
But nothing has changed yet. The government has no wish to agree with the court order.
On Tuesday, Obasanjo's government said it would comply with a court order and instruct private fuel marketers to cut pump prices by more than a fifth, to return them to their levels in early February, as demanded by the unions.
The Federal High Court also ordered the unions to suspend the strike.
